(A Cheat Sheet for Hiring Managers)
CMOs vs Marketing Directors...few know the difference, and this creates real problems when it comes to expectations.

A CMO sets the marketing vision at the board level. They own the P&L, manage multi-million dollar budgets, and their direct reports are VPs and Directors (Brand, Communications, Growth, etc.). They manage the people who manage the teams.
A Marketing Director owns both the strategy and the execution. They're often the most senior marketing person in small businesses, reporting directly to founders. They build the plans, run the campaigns, and manage six-to-seven figure budgets. They are in the work every day.
If your job description says "think big picture" and "roll up their sleeves" in the same paragraph, you're hiring a Marketing Director. A CMO's main responsibility is to think big-picture (macro, forecasting the future), but they need corporate-scale resources and teams to execute. They typically work for brands earning $100M+.
