Professional Services Marketing: Why Word-of-Mouth Isn’t Enough
Marketing doesn’t work for professional services. I hear this a lot. It's usually followed by, "Our business is strictly word-of-mouth." Word-of-mouth is marketing. It's just the version you can't control, scale, or predict.
When firms say marketing doesn't work, what's usually failed is the chosen marketing strategy. Consumer-style hype and generic ads aren't built to sell high-ticket expertise, so they don't.
Professional services marketing that actually works does three things:
1) Builds trust before the first phone call
2) Signals exactly who the firm is for, and who it isn't
3) Turns intangible expertise into something a client can actually evaluate and buy
Unfortunately, none of that happens by accident. It's a system, not a personality trait of the founder or a lucky referral network.
The firms that scale past word-of-mouth aren't the ones with the best reputations, they're the select few who figured out how to make that reputation repeatable. In short, they started treating their expertise like a product instead of a personality.
